CA024 Mummers' Parade Card
It’s a custom so old no-one really knows how it started. Throughout the Christmas holidays on the island of Newfoundland, Canada, folks disguise themselves and go visiting their friends and neighbours, acting foolish, and spreading holiday cheer. They wear masks or one of Nan’s doilies to conceal their faces; table cloths, lampshades, pants stuffed up with cotton, and unmentionables on top of it all - the more ridiculous the better. Willing hosts invite them in and try to guess their identities while food and drink are passed around. Someone pulls out an accordion and a set of spoons and its time to break’er down. Then the party carries on to the next house for more of the same. It’s a bit like Halloween at Christmas, when the grown-ups go trick-or-treating for Vienna sausages, fruit cake, and a glass of Purity syrup or a good, stiff, drink. · 5.5 x 4.25" folded, blank notecard
